What does an improvement district do?
Ever notice how some neighborhoods just feel cleaner and safer? Who puts flowers in the pots and hangs the holiday lights? Who empties the garbage cans on the corner? Who sweeps up after the Saturday night bar crowd, so the streets are clean for the Sunday morning coffee crowd? Chances are, an Improvement District is behind it!
Improvement Districts are geographic areas where residents, businesses, and property owners collectively agree to invest a little extra in their neighborhood through a self-imposed tax — called an "assessment." These districts are voted on by the very people who pay into them, and here on Broadway and Lincoln, every dollar stays right in the community that raised it.
There are two main types: General Improvement Districts (GIDs) tax both residential and commercial property owners, while Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) only apply to commercial properties. For the Broadway GID, 92% of assessments come from commercial property owners, with the remaining 8% from residential properties. We intentionally included residents because we believe the next 50+ years of Broadway's future should be shaped by everyone — neighbors and business owners, together.
For tenants and business owners who don't own their building, whether the assessment applies to them depends on how their lease is written. That's exactly why the Broadway Merchants Association spent nearly two years keeping the whole neighborhood informed, involved, and heard every step of the way.
We're excited to move into the future of Broadway - together.
Who is the Broadway GID?
The Broadway GID is built by the South Broadway community, for the South Broadway community. What started as an idea from the Broadway Merchants Association, is now a fully formed district managed by business owners, residents, and other community stakeholders.
Our advisory Board is made up of a diverse group of community members, mainly volunteers, with a vested interest in making meaningful improvements to the area, while keeping the heart and soul of South Broadway intact. Here’s who we are:
